Last night March 4th at 9:40PM your Fairfield Glade Fire Department responded to a 911 call reporting a brush fire at Durham Rd and St George Place. A tree had fallen causing a downed power line at the scene and had ignited dry brush. Forty mph wind gusts scattered embers igniting several more fires.  As a precaution, the FGFD approached 3 homes and asked the residents to evacuate. Subsequently, the Fairfield Glade Police issued an evacuation order for the area. A temporary shelter for evacuees was established at nearby Fairfield Glade Police Station. The fires were under control by 12:30am and those who had evacuated were allowed to return to their homes. Fire crews remained on scene until after 1 am to cordon off the downed power line area and prevent fires from reigniting. It is estimated that the fire consumed approximately 8 to 10 acres.  At 7:12 the next morning fire crews responded to a report of a smoldering tree. Community club crews assisted the fire crew by pulling the dead tree down thereby allowing firefighters to extinguish the rotted tree whose fire had made its way into the interior of the trunk. As of this writing, there are still homes waiting for power to be restored.
