Neighbors Helping Neighbors

As first responders, we appreciate the recognition of our work in protecting our communities’ lives and property. After Tuesday night’s brush fire, our crew was hard at work today, cleaning equipment and reloading hose back on our trucks when Donna McManus and Robert Berrick surprised the crew with a delicious dessert to thank them for their hard work in protecting their property. At the same time, Donna took it upon herself to organize a Facebook’s “No Whining” page to encourage residents to donate to the department.

Given where we live, brush fires are a real concern. On Tuesday night, Christine Bronson and Robert Verheyn’s concern was realized. High winds that night had brought down a tree near their home. The tree hit a power line and the sparks from the live wire ignited the forest floor. With fire surrounding their home, they fought. Robert, with their garden hose, tried in vain to keep the fire at bay, with the strong winds negating his gallant attempts. Thankfully, their 911 call was heard. With 21 of our finest volunteer firefighters responding, along with 4 fire trucks, 1500 feet of hose and three hours of hard work, your FGFD was able to bring the fire under control. As residents of Fairfield Glade, we live in a forest. That forest, while beautiful, can be scary. But together, we can overcome those fears. Take time to clear brush around your home to provide a safe zone. Read and understand the National Fire Prevention Associations tips on preventing wildfires.
